Chicago Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz died on Wednesday. A few days later the Blackhawks wanted to honor thier fallen owner with a moment of silence. This seems pretty straight forward, theres no story here. But its what happened during that moment of silence that pretty much summed up how many fell about Mr. Wirtz. During the moment of silence alot of the fans booed.
I would like to preface this by saying there was not very many people booing because there was not that many people there. Under Bill Wirtz as team president the Blackhawks have been without a stanley cup since 1961, the longest drought in the NHL. They have not made the finals since 1992 and have not made the playoffs since 1997. Recentley the Blackhawks have been one of the laughing stocks in the NHL. This is a sad tale for a franchise that was once a proud and enviable team. 28 straight years the Blackhawks made the playoffs. The have been to greats like Hull, Espisito, Savard and gave Roenick and Belfour starts. There are an original six franchise and have a strong hockey market in wich to operate. They have the best uniforms in professional sports, even Reebok couldn't ruin them. Mr. Wirtz has gone over forty years without a stanley cup, but so has Toronto and Vancouver pretty damn close. The reason why those people booed is because of Wirtz's business practices. Not only did he fail at bringing a winner to Chicago, he blacked out home games. He failed to get people to his over sized arena so he punished the fans. If the fans didn't pay, they couldn't see the hawks. So on top of the yearly frustration of watching there team go down the tubes again and again, the fans were expected to pay to see it. I don't believe anyone should disrespect the dead, but I am not a Blackhawks fan.
